Dodgers' Manny is suspended for 50 games- back by 4th of July; A Las Villas Note.

Dodgers' star Manny Ramirez shows up in an exclusive story in the L.A. Times today online, "Manny Ramirez will be suspended 50 games for positive drug test," By Bill Shaikin and Dylan Hernandez, Times Staff Writers 8:35 AM PDT, May 7, 2009 http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-manny-ramirez8-2009may08,0,6324894.story The first paragraphs sums up the situation as is stands: "Manny Ramirez has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and will be suspended 50 games starting today, The Times has learned."

In a KABC-AM radio interview this morning, Times reporter Bill Shaikin said that the suspension was not stated to be for "steroid" use, and that Major League Baseball does not give out details on the nature of the test results. A separate statement just issued by the players association says that Ramirez will accept the suspension penalty, starting with today's game.

NOTE: The LHS Alumni Association's Dodger game fundraiser will be on August 19th against the St. Louis Cardinals, well after the suspension will end. That night will also be a "bobble-head doll" night giveaway... so far, the personality is not named for that third doll giveaway. If Manny truly did take any prohibited substances as reported, then having a bobble-headed doll in his likeness has some real significance beyond being a simple souvenir. About a third of his salary will be lost to him. Trying to be positive, Manny will be eligible to play again when his own bobble-head doll night gets here on July 22nd, the 2nd of 3 bobble-head doll nights, so he should be back in form by then. See Alumni link in sidebar for their website, tickets at $20 each.

Also on Mayor Sam's blog today, just scroll down from the Manny story for a bit of news on the financial doings of the cancelled Las Villas project. The site is next to Lincoln High, on the former Rose Eye Clinic property, and that immediate proximity to schools was what caused the big complaint to lead to stopping the construction of the facility. Not such a good deal from a City investment view. CM Ed Reyes will undoubtedly be contacted about this impact on the budget- he certainly was for the objections to it.
