Friday's latino boycott by the students hit the school pretty severely. Over 1,000 students were absent at LHS, creating a loss of about $23,000.00, according to the report from the school administration.

The overall reason for this was to demonstrate dissatisfaction with the Governor's work in opposition to the license law for residents not legally in the state, or undocumented, if you prefer. In any event, all students in L.A., and especially latino students, have be in school as much as there is an opportunity to do so. The schools have so little money coming through that this loss makes the student the losers.

I find it difficult to see the wisdom of hurting one's self as a method to get a point across. The students' actual level of commitment and understanding of what was represented to them mattered little. As a general observation, the students were given a reason to miss school, some saying that it was a "Mexican holiday," and they were taking advantage of it. I think they were the ones where advantage was taken.

Using our students, who should be given every opportunity to obtain a free education, as a method to wield some clout was a very unfair, selfish and self-destructive act. I don't see how failing to pursue the opportunity to receive an education should be considered to be productive when fighting deficiencies in literacy alone is a reason for spending MORE time in school, not less.

The leaders, if you want to call them that, should not be praised by anyone. They hurt the students, did nothing to advance their education, cut a lot of funding that makes the schools run. They made it even more difficult to accomplish the task of educating our young people, a particular segment of the population which has long been faced with high drop-out rates at the local schools.

Using the students very simply as pawns in the game of politics, wanting to protest the driver's license issue, is just wrong. There was nothing in it for the students, nothing even relating to issues of education. Maybe THAT would be a questionably meritorious basis, but this wasn't even close.

Again, I find it very difficult to understand how hurting yourself can show anyone how smart you are.

Seasoned alumni may remember the blowouts from 1968 on the Eastside, but that was directly connected to the school situation. Even then, many were leaving campus as a matter of peer pressure as for dissatisfaction with conditions. That was the decade of social change and to a large extent, many too young to be a part of that period would like to see a reason now to have the same experiences of protesting for their cause.

Let's at least have it be worth the costs.

For those students still IN school, the LHS baseball program is coming together with tryouts coming up. The Lincoln soccer program is underway. The JV team played Roosevelt's twice-champion JV team on Thursday afternoon at LHS, but with Friday's activities, the winning side is still unknown.

Two more weeks of classes until the holiday break for 3 weeks and then back to classes. There is another reunion planned. This one is going to be next year, 2004, to bring together the Class of 1964. More on this later. Just saw a flyer today at LHS.

If anyone noticed the L.A. Times yesterday, Tuesday in the California section, there was a photo of one of the 4 shooting victims. The shooting happened after school at about 3:45 p.m at a restaurant just across the street from the front entrance to the school. So far there is not much information about the cause, the perpetrators or the exact way it happened. The shots were heard by many on campus at the time.

It doesn't appear that there is much that can be done to prevent the persons from doing such things to other people. Fortunately, none of these victims do not appear to be in a life threatening condition.

It seems that there is so much of these violent acts these days that the Times did not bother to write more than a caption, nor was much made in the television and radio news. Apprehension of the involved persons and punishment is about all that you can expect. If anyone has a plan or an idea for prevention of off-campus violence, let us know.

As for the school itself, there is the modernization work still in progress. The 500 building is done. The Administration (100) building is half done with a wing about to re-open and the other wing about to close for the workers to get at it. The Library balcony area is worked over to extend the area out into what was an exterior area.

More is happening, but this is the most notable change for now.

Some Good news: Lincoln beat L.A. High in the Homecoming Game this afternoon.
Check standings: http://www.latimes.com/sports/highschool/la-campus-cc-standings,0,5036376.htmlstory?coll=la-util-sports-highschool [cut and paste this url in your browser]
We missed out on a big game and another of those new night game experiences since the LAUSD Board put off all the Friday varsity games. (Looking at the bright side, it rained pretty well during the time we would have been watching the game.)

Next night game at home is November 14th against Eagle Rock, 7 p.m. varsity, 4 p.m. frosh/soph.

MORE NEWS, KEEP READING:

The 90th Gala Reunion Dance at the Biltmore this past Saturday was worth all the work it took to set it up. We missed those who could not make it, but enjoyed seeing all the people that attended and were a part of our days past during those Lincoln years.

If you went and were part of the crowd on Saturday, thanks for coming and making it so much the better. The reunions are about the place, but more importantly, about the people who were in that "place." I will leave it to others to note their ideas and experiences at the reunion, but it was nice to see that many of the people from my time at Lincoln surprised me and attended the festivities.

Let's hope that there will be some resurgence of the Lincoln spirit of old so that there will be that Tiger Pride showing more generously as in days of old on campus. We certainly had that on Saturday.

HOMECOMING FRIDAY, HALLOWEEN- 6 p.m. for the Varsity Game. Come out after trick or treating and support the team, enjoy the new night game environment. If you have not been to a night game this season, you have to see one to appreciate the difference. Our bleachers were replaced completely a few years back and now there are lights.

LOS ANGELES HIGH will be our formidable opponent. The Homecoming King and Queen and their court will be presented at halftime before getting out for the Homecoming Dance later in the evening.

There will be large quantities of food available from the home and visitor concessions stands operated by the LHS Alumni Association and the LHS Girls' Basketball team. The pricing is probably one of the the best deals in the LAUSD sports venues and the menu has enough variety to give you something that you will like.

Late news:

The Alumni Career Share Day planned for Wednesday, October 15th is postponed until February. We had many alumni unable to return on that particular date and with the upcoming 90th Anniversary Events, the planning efforts have stretched thin our alumni organizing staff.

FOOTBALL GAME- Oct. 10th.

Friday's game against Belmont was the second night game for LHS. We didn't win the varsity game, but it was not until the second half that Belmont was able to score. The 4 pm game played by the jv or frosh/soph, whichever is more accurate, was a winner for LHS.

Attendance was less than the first game, but there still seemed to be more spirit from the fans who did come, and there were lots of them. Still no field band for Lincoln, but our students and alumni members joined for a band in the stands and was making their presence known. The half-time presentation by Belmont's marching band and their combination of cheerleaders, drill team/ dancers was very impressive and received well by the LHS fans.

We continue to demonstrate good sportsmanship on the field and in the stands. I heard many people complimenting the Belmont students on their half-time performance. As the Belmont bus convoy left, it did not appear to have the police car escort at the end of the line which I noticed happened as the Roosevelt busses left Lincoln following their game here.

Lincoln Heights Youth Football players and coaches were presented at half-time, taking a walk on the field where many of them will be playing when they become LHS Tigers in a few years.

Unfortunately, there was a very small showing of fans on the Belmont side, missing the opportunity to show their support of the Belmont football players and half-time accomplishments of the performers.

LHS had less time on the field at half-time, but the dance performance was very enjoyable. Our Tiger cheerleaders were there to keep the fans involved and entertained. We have some excellent lighting on the field now and if you haven't been by yet, do take in the game at least once this year. We have two left at home.

The football program at night is improving with each experience. We have the home and visitor concessions in operation. The Alumni booth on the visitor's side was sold out very early, while Mr. Huff's basketball team was able to handle the overflow from Belmont's side after the half-time performance.

The entire event proceeded smoothly, but there is still one element from days of old that is missing, namely, the alma mater being sung at the end of the game.

Some conflicting information was passed along that was printed on these pages. Game times were announced at first as 7 pm then 6 pm, but then the varsity game was played at 7. The student ticket prices were reported to be $2.00, but then it seems that that is the price for a 12-years and under child, the students paying $4.00. The gate price is $5.00 for students and adults, and that seems to be the only thing that is not changing.

No game next week. After that week, the game on Oct. 25 is at Wilson High in El Sereno, a night game.

The third night game at home will be Homecoming on Halloween, October 31st, Friday at 6 p.m.

Do the family trick or treating early and come out to show your support of the Tigers in the night time environment at LHS' Homecoming Game played against Los Angeles High School.

Friday's game was a sell-out, thanks to all the support from the LHS family of alumni, students and faculty/administrators and support staff.

A few more weeks til the next home game, and then we will be in league play, but nice to have a local opponent. There was one completed pass that took the Tigers from the far end of the field to about the 50 yard line. Stunning, even though a turnover a little later unwound the progress. Hey, it's still early and we will be getting better. It was sure a work out for the defense, with a lot of time on the field.

Please check your programs for the schedule and ticket prices. It looks like $5 at the gate and $4 for advance student sales. Parking was a challenge, but manageable. Still need attention to the handicapped parking to be in compliance with the law.

There were lots of old friends there to visit with, which goes for all the alumni years. It was a very enjoyable evening... now we see what we have been missing all these years without night games at home.

Upcoming events- Gala Reunion, November 1, 2003- Saturday at the Biltmore Hotel. $75 per ticket. Plan this into your activities; and buy a pair of tickets.

Career Share Day for each of the volunteering Alumni to visit with a different class all to themselves for three periods. October 15th. 8:30 to Noon with a complimentary luncheon and some refreshments at the morning and nutrition breaks. Call, fax, or email Vera Padilla at LHS.

Tonight's Football Game-
$5.00 GATE TICKET SALES UNTIL FULL.

URGENT REMINDER- PARKING or "there's very little parking"- - -

-mainly just street only, unless you know some folks in the area and can use their driveways.

HANDICAPPED PARKING - remember "90 Years" as a school? A long time - some of us are getting up there in years, and some of us just feel like it, so it's a real issue that will have to be much more clearly defined, by next home game at the lastest, I'd expect. This is so critical for Lincoln because of the huge incline from N. Broadway, and the stairs upon stairs by the "tennis"/basketball courts. Bad enough for able-bodied students. You have been there. You know.

(Oh, and I am not complaining, but just observing. If the handicapped parking and access issues are not addressed ASAP, there WILL be someone who WILL complain to get it "corrected" ultimately (= "litigation"), so let's get with it before it gets to that point. It's a civil rights issue like so many more of the things in the past from which we now benefit, so don't get too excited about LHS being "forced" to do anything. Get left out and you will feel differently about things. Elevators are being constructed throughout the school, but not yet done.... it will be a while for that to be ready.)

"Handicapped Parking" is not clearly established, at least at the Thursday alumni meeting, but compliance with ADEA and related laws is required. You may want to call the school's office- 323-221-4021- then "O" to get a live person.

BE EARLY OR CAR POOL OR EXPECT TO WALK FAR. Gates St. School is supposed to allow parking on their property, but a $3.00 fee was the word at the meeting. (Said to be due to Gates' liability concerns, but that fee just establishes the agreement to care for your car's safety, generally.)

SCHEDULE:
4:30 p.m. Alumni & other VIP in Girls' Gym for Reception.
6:30 p.m. Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony on Andrus Field and the new lights will be powered up.
7:00 p.m. Kickoff for the Lincoln Tigers v. the Roosevelt Rough Riders

Roosevelt colors are, as accurately as observed, crimson and gold- like USC. PLEASE avoid wearing those colors if you are a LINCOLN fan.

Lincoln colors- like if you could forget- are Orange and Black. (BTW, Homecoming is on Friday, October 31st.) Show some school spirit, wear your colors proudly.
-----------------------
Good Luck, Tigers!

Thursday, September 18, 2003

The Alumni Association meeting last night focused attention on tomorrow's event, the Ribbon Cutting tomorrow night before the varsity football game against Roosevelt. This will be at 6:30 p.m. The wooden bleachers were replaced a few years ago with aluminum style benches and are for the home fans only. Capacity is rated at 2,100 persons. We may be getting close to a sell out for that game, so be as early as you can for the 6:30 p.m. Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony.

Mr. Jim Molina, LHS Principal, Ed Reyes, 1st District City Council Member, and LHS Student Body President will have the honors, at which time the lights for Andrus Field will become fully operational. At our meeting, we got a preview of the lights in action as they were being tested to make sure it all worked as per the plans.

Ticket prices were changed at the last minute by the Business Office and Gate Prices for available tickets will be $5.00, the same as pre-orders and not $7.00 as earlier announced to us. (Next game may be different- 4 night home games this year.)

LAST WEEK- LHS v. Mark Keppel, won by Lincoln, 41-0. Hope the team can keep up the momentum.

Our Varsity team will be on the field for the Ribbon Cutting.

Announcement: Due to problems beyond Alumni and Student control (at this time) there will not be a field marching band for this game. Several students and alumni band members will, however, volunteer to create a band to be set up in the stands to provide the necessary element to our games. More on the Band situation later.

Nov. 1 Gala Reunion tickets at $75.00 available now. Yes, Food served. It will be buffet style food stations, with seating throughout the area.

More later.

ALUMNI MEETING CORRECTION- The correct date for meeting is September 8, Monday, not the 4th (yesterday). This is why the tele. no. given- to be sure, as I was not. Sorry for misinformation. There was an adjustment in the dates at the last meeting that I did not note. I just found out about it too late to be able to post before the expected meeting time.

Guest Book access problem is fixed. You can use and view in regular method.

Note updates and changes to "Reunion Information" page, "90th Anniversary Events" page.
Visitors attempting to view Guest Book: If you get "Invalid Referrer" message, there is a problem with the Editor's encoding that uses a %7E in the link, instead of the ~. I will have to make some changes from another computer to try to restore the correct encoding. Why is that? Must be "progress" since the old editor version was fine..... I will go back to that computer to try restoring the original encoding. BUT, .......

the SOLUTION FOR NOW- to see Guest Book entries,

go to "Sign In Guestbook" then hit that link to enter "Sign In page".

Then, don't write any entry, but just click on "All Done" button, which then will take you to "Guestbook"

This method should only be needed for a day or so, I hope, but use this alternative meanwhile.

thank you. rg.

There is still no additional information passed on here to me about the 90th Lincoln High Anniversary events or anything else. Some new items shown in guest book entries.

Saturday, July 19, 2003

Nothing new with LHS activities from last time. See Guest Book entry announcing a CAR WASH event, per Manny Castro. Last Monday, 7/14/03, meeting held regarding the 90th Anniversay event, but time conflicts did not permit me to attend.... so .... NOTHING to report.... an update to me from time to time would change this situation. AVAILABLE COMMUNICATION METHODS include leaving Phone or pager messages, e-mail, anything.

Received E-mail from NICK PACHECO- on activities upon his city hall exit and change over to Antonio Villaraigosa, his successor as Council member, 14th District. (I am assuming this is same NICK PACHECO as the person holding the office- or maybe it's from someone with same name and just very interested in the council member's actions. I did not check authenticity of sender, but even so, it would not change anything presented. More on this should be posted within a few more days for your own information.

LHS closed for summer. Many other high schools going full speed on year-round tracks.

Wednesday, July 09, 2003

There still is no update information in to post on reunion activities since last note, but meeting planned for July 14th.

Without information, not much able to convey, so that is where we are up to now.

Tuesday, July 01, 2003

There is more developing on the events for the 90th Anniversary of LHS, I am told by a good source, Vera Padilla. As the details are received, I can pass that on in the regular pages.

There will be another meeting on July 14th, I am informed. You can see about helping out, big or small fashion, and that will make it easier for everyone else to get done. More people are needed at different times. You can fit in as you want.
