End Free Parking? A Part-Time Legislature is sounding like a better idea.

"State lawmakers take aim at free parking - There is too much of it, they say, and it encourages people to drive instead of taking the bus, walking or bicycling. A Senate proposal would prompt cities and businesses to reduce its availability." By Patrick McGreevy, L.A.Times, January 29, 2010, http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-free-parking29-2010jan29,0,211620.story

There is just too much free time for your California legislators when they stay too long at Sacramento. A part-time legislature is a move to reel in these folks who must have so much extra time on their hands that they must feel obligated to generate bills that demonstrate the "How does this sound?" approach to law-making.

PART TIME LEGISLATURE - another reason for this to happen.

The change to part-time will have these people working on needed business and not encourage waste and self-gain. They will not have time to waste on hosting the special interests as now, become involved with social activities of illicit nature, and reduce the numbers of wacky laws they dream up from being planted in Sacramento for just too long compared to what's needed. They are there full-time and you still don't see budgets done on time.

Requiring them to work immediately on a priotized basis- what's important gets done FIRST- will bring some efficiency to the State legislature, reduce their tendencies too often to engage in unethical or illegal conduct by the special interests temptations and reduce the salaries and expense items as well.

There's more to this idea but you see ideas like requiring elimination of free parking and then you see what we have for "busy work" done that challenges notions of common sense. We have a lot of things happening that are outright attempts at social engineering, the creation of a nanny state and elimination of personal choice and freedoms. Yes, some good things from driving less may happen but this ignores all the collateral or consequential consequences that could be more of a negtive than what's espoused by this lawmaker.

One of the items on the idea of eliminationg free parking was that it gets in the way of the better use of it for development. That might be true if you want to live in huge honeycomb residential monstrosities. Packing people in like sardines is an idea that goes along with "densification" mindset of city council. Too much free time also makes one able to solicit offers for support as campaign donations, in effect, just selling themselves for the use of whoever comes up with money.
